+86 13833799929In industries such as power, communication, and municipal services, a top hat usually refers to a protective device installed on high-quality electrical poles, lamp posts, pipelines, etc. It is mainly used for dust, rain, and foreign object intrusion prevention, while also improving the aesthetic appearance of facilities. Here is a detailed introduction:
1、 Function and application scenarios
central role
Protective products: prevent rainwater, dust, birds, insects, etc. from entering the interior of the pole body (such as hollow cement poles, steel pipe poles), avoid internal water accumulation, rust or line faults.
Insulation isolation: Some top caps are made of insulation material, which can isolate the metal parts on the top of the pole to prevent leakage or induced electrical risks (such as power pole top caps).
Identification and aesthetics: Through color (such as red, yellow) or design, it serves as a warning or beautification function (such as municipal road light poles, landscape poles).
Typical applications
Electric poles: Cement poles and steel poles of 10kV and below are of high quality to prevent rainwater from seeping into the steel bars of the pole body and causing corrosion.
Communication pole/monitoring pole: fixed on fiber optic cable poles and monitoring poles to protect internal cable interfaces or equipment.
Municipal facilities: high-quality street lamp poles, traffic signal poles, and gas pipelines to enhance safety and cleanliness of the city.
Industrial pipelines: Excellent products for chemical and thermal pipelines to prevent debris from falling into the pipeline and affecting medium transportation.
2、 Materials and Classification
1. Classify by material
Plastic (PVC/ABS)
Features: Lightweight, corrosion-resistant (based on actual reports), good insulation, low cost, but poor high temperature resistance (based on actual reports) (usually ≤ 70 ℃).
Application: communication pole, street lamp pole, low-voltage power pole top cap.
Metal (steel/aluminum alloy)
Features: Good strength, strong weather resistance (hot-dip galvanized steel rust proof), but heavy and may conduct electricity (insulation treatment is required).
Application: High voltage power poles, industrial pipeline caps, or scenarios requiring impact resistance (such as typhoon areas).
Composite material (FRP/fiberglass)
Features: Insulation, corrosion resistance (based on actual reports), aging resistance, strength between plastic and metal, suitable for complex environments.
Application: Power poles in coastal areas and pipe caps in chemical industrial parks.
2. Classify by structure
Dome type
Hemispherical or conical, covering the top plane of the pole, with a simple structure and easy installation.
Example: Ordinary cement pole top cap (usually 5-10cm larger in diameter than the pole top).
Belt edge type (with rainproof eaves)
A circular edge extends from the top to increase the rainproof area and prevent rainwater from seeping into the gaps of high-quality products when it flows down the rod.
Example: The top cap of the street lamp pole in rainy areas can have a width of up to 10-15 cm at the edge.
combined type
Composed of a top cover and a base, the base is fixed to the top of the pole by bolts, and the top cover is detachable for easy maintenance of equipment inside the pole.
Example: Monitoring pole top cap (may have a camera power supply or switch installed inside).
Breathable type
There are breathable holes at the top (with insect proof mesh (based on actual reports), which balance the air pressure inside and outside the rod to prevent the accumulation of condensed water and prevent insects from entering.
Example: Top cap of communication fiber optic cable junction box pole.
3、 Specifications and Installation
1. Specification parameters
Diameter: needs to match the outer diameter of the rod top, common specifications:
Cement pole cap: Φ 150mm (suitable for slightly diameter 150mm electric poles), Φ 190mm, Φ 230mm, etc.
Top cap of steel pipe pole: customized according to the pipe diameter (such as Φ 100mm, Φ 165mm).
Height: usually 10-30cm, a high top hat can provide strong protection (such as preventing birds from building nests).
Color: default gray and white, red is commonly used for power scenes (warning), and color can be customized for municipal scenes.
2. Installation method
Clip-on
The top cap base has an elastic buckle that can be directly inserted into the groove of the rod top without the need for tools, making it suitable for plastic top caps.
Step: Align with the top of the rod, press down firmly until the buckle is securely fastened, and confirm that there is no shaking.
Bolt fixed type
Reserved bolt holes on the base are connected to the rod top flange or prefabricated screw holes through M6~M10 bolts, suitable for metal or composite material top caps.
Steps:
Drill holes on the top of the pole and install embedded bolts (or welded flanges).
Place the top cap, align the bolt holes, and tighten with nuts (it is recommended to add spring washers to prevent loosening).
Adhesive type
Use epoxy resin adhesive or structural adhesive to stick the top cap base to the top of the pole, suitable for scenarios where drilling is not possible (such as ceramic poles, old pole renovations).
Attention: It is necessary to confirm that the top of the pole is clean and dry, the adhesive layer thickness is uniform, and it can be used after 24 hours of curing.
3. Installation points
The top cap should be tightly attached to the top of the pole, and the gaps can be filled with sealant to prevent rainwater from seeping in.
If metal caps are used for power poles, insulation treatment (such as spraying insulation paint or installing rubber pads) is required.
In areas with multiple typhoons, metal caps fixed with bolts should be preferred, and windproof buckle designs should be added.
4、 Maintenance and replacement
Daily inspection
Conduct an annual inspection to check if the top cap is loose, damaged, or aged. Important inspections include:
Whether the buckle or bolt has come off (especially after strong winds).
Is the plastic cap cracked or faded (brittle and easily damaged after aging).
Whether the metal top cap is corroded or deformed (such as being pecked by birds or impacted by external objects).
Fault handling
Slight looseness: Re tighten the bolts or adjust the buckle, and apply sealant.
Damage/Aging: Replace the top cap as a whole, and it is recommended to choose a material with good weather resistance (such as upgrading from plastic to fiberglass).
Internal water accumulation: Remove the top cap, clean the water accumulation inside the rod, and check if the drainage holes are blocked (some rod bodies have drainage holes at the bottom).
Replacement cycle
Plastic top cap: 5-8 years (susceptible to aging due to UV radiation).
Metal cap: 10-15 years (when the hot-dip galvanized layer is intact).
Composite material top cap: 8-10 years (depending on the degree of environmental corrosion).
